muiは、太田睦子とアイヴァン・ヴァルタニアンによる、日本の工芸を世界へとつなぐプロジェクトです。
mui is a project by Mutsuko Ota and Ivan Vartanian, connecting the world to Japan's living craft traditions.
無為（mui）は道家思想に由来します。無（からっぽ）＋為（行い）——自然の流れに調和しながら為すこと。陶芸家は土と対話し、木工家は木目に沿う。何十年もの修練を経て、手と道具と素材が一体となる。muiは大量生産の対極にあり、工芸を通じたヒューマニズムを探ります。
The name mui (無為) derives from Daoist philosophy: 無 (emptiness) + 為 (doing) — "effortless action," acting in harmony with the natural flow. The potter dialogues with clay; the woodworker follows the grain. Over decades, hand, tool, and material become one. mui is the antithesis of mass production — a humanism explored through craft.
東京生まれ。早稲田大学卒業後、サントリー広報部、『マリ・クレール』編集部を経て、『エスクァイア』『GQ』などでアート・写真・文化を担当。2012年にアート写真雑誌『IMA』を創刊し、エディトリアルディレクターを務める。
Editor and cultural producer in Tokyo. After Waseda University and roles at Suntory, Marie Claire, Esquire, and GQ, she launched the art-photography magazine IMA in 2012, which she directs alongside the IMA Photobooks imprint.
東京を拠点に活動する編集者、キュレーター、著者。写真とアート出版の分野で国際的に知られ、2004年に出版プロジェクト「Goliga」を設立。『Setting Sun』『Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and ’70s』などを手がける。
Editor, curator, and author in Tokyo, internationally recognized in photography and art publishing. He founded Goliga in 2004; his books include Setting Sun and Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and ’70s.
